Closed cell EPDM foam combines thermal insulation with resistance to weather, water, moisture, ozone, and sunlight.
This cellular material cannot match the high-temperature resistance of silicone thermal insulation, but EPDM is stronger, less expensive, and more resistant to abrasion. Closed cell EPDM foam is often used in outdoor applications or when greater durability is required.

Advantages of Closed Cell EPDM Foam
Effective Thermal Barrier
EPDM is one of the many gasket materials that ISP die cuts, but its applications aren’t limited to environmental sealing. When EPDM is expanded into foam, this synthetic elastomer can develop a closed-cell structure with air-filled pockets. Because air has low thermal conductivity, closed cell EPDM foam provides an effective thermal barrier.
Lightweight and Compressible
This cellular material is also lightweight and compressible, which aids with installation. Closed cell foams can’t match open cell foams in terms of sound absorption, but closed cell EPDM provides effective vibration dampening for noise reduction. Today, many closed cell EPDM foams are halogen-free, have low levels of VOCs, and meet RoHS requirements for regulatory compliance.
ISP Capabilities
ISP die cuts sheets and rolls of thermal insulation materials, including closed cell EPDM foam, from our material partners. We also convert customer-supplied materials and provide value-added services, such as adhesive backing, that complement our precision die cutting.
From prototyping through production, ISP can be an extension of your engineering team
