NSF / ANSI Standard 61 Compliant EPDM Gasket Material for Drinking Water Systems
NSF / ANSI Standard 61 establishes requirements for materials and products that come into contact with potable water systems. Developed by NSF International and adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), NSF / ANSI Standard 61 is designed to ensure safe, clean drinking water and applies to all 50 U.S. states.
NSF / ANSI Standard 61 Compliant Materials vs. NSF / ANSI Standard 61 Certified Materials
Failure to meet NSF / ANSI Standard 61 requirements could mean losing bids, facing fines, or removing and replacing installed products. Therefore, it’s also important to understand the difference between NSF / ANSI Standard 61 compliant materials and NSF / ANSI Standard 61 certified materials
- NSF / ANSI Standard 61 compliant materials are tested by an independently-accredited testing laboratory according to the NSF / ANSI 61 Standard.
- NSF / ANSI Standard 61 certified materials are tested by NSF, at the their labs, and are certified as meeting the NSF / ANSI 61 Standard. Products that are certified are also known as NSF listed.
NSF / ANSI Standard 61 Compliant EPDM Rubber – Material Overview and Technical Specifications
Interstate Specialty Products can create custom gaskets made of 75-durometer NSF / ANSI Standard 61 compliant EPDM that provides excellent resistance to heat, ozone, and sunlight along with superior resistance to both hot and cold water. This ASTM grade gasket material is black in color and has a smooth finish.
The NSF / ANSI Standard 61 compliant EPDM rubber that Interstate Specialty Product recommends has a hardness (Shore A) of 75 +/-5 and a general temperature range of -40° to 275° F or -40° to 135 C. Technical specifications for ozone resistance are 100 PPHM at 40° C for 72 hours with no cracking.
NSF / ANSI Standard 61 Compliant EPDM Gaskets – Design and Manufacturing Considerations
Gasket designers can specify NSF / ANSI Standard 61 compliant EPDM rubber in gauges of 1/16-in (1.59-mm), 1/8-in (3.17-mm), 3/16-in (4.76-mm), and 1/4-in (6.35-mm). This ASTM D1330 Grade 1 & 2 gasket material is within RMA commercial gauge tolerances.
