Nate Cobb, Director of Business Development for ISP reporting in! My colleagues and I just got back from the 2024 Clinical Lab Expo in Chicago, put on by the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM). Joining me were Casey Savickas, Account Manager; Jaclyn Skagerlind, Vice President; and John Savickas, CEO.
During our two-day walking tour of the show, we took away some key insights that are sure to inspire the future of medical diagnostics products and methodologies.
Advancements in Rapid Testing Technology
As it is with so many other industries, artificial intelligence (AI) was a hot topic at the Clinical Lab Expo. We expect to see medical professionals utilizing AI to read scans and reports to deliver doctors a starting point of diagnosis as AI continues to advance.
However, interpreting results is just one part of diagnostics. For those results to be accurate, sample collection tools that are effective and easy to use are critical. With this in mind, medtech companies are developing their rapid testing products to be user-friendly for both patients and lab techs alike – ultimately reducing diagnostic processing time so that patients can start a treatment plan sooner.
One example of this ease-of-use approach that caught our eye at the expo was the rise in breath test kits to diagnose infections. This type of test has a great benefit to the patient, as there are no invasive swabs or uncomfortable specimen collection processes. For example, Gulf Coast Scientific’s “PlyoPLUS+” kit for testing H. pylori infections uses a collection bag with a two-way air valve that allows for a quick visit to the lab and re-sampling when necessary.
As breath test kits grow in popularity, we’re looking forward to helping manufacture them. With our designation as an ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 9001:2015 certified materials converter, ISP is well-equipped to meet the needs of medtech manufacturers – offering a wide range of die cut wicking materials and membranes used in diagnostic test strips and sample collection kits.
Vaccine Patches
Introducing a groundbreaking leap in vaccine technology: the vaccine patch! We saw lots of amazing stuff at the expo, but these things really blew me away. Even though they’re only the size of a postage stamp, I think vaccine patches are about to make a BIG impact on public health.
Harnessing the power of dissolvable microneedles, these patches deliver life-saving vaccinations directly to the skin. Say goodbye to the dreaded needle – with vaccine patches, the process is not only painless but also incredibly easy to administer. No more anxiety, no more discomfort, and fewer side effects like inflammation and fever. These are great benefits for those who delay or avoid receiving important vaccines due to their fear of needles.
There are still a few areas of research needed for this technology to be licensed in the US, including dosage specifications, storage solutions, and sterility. However, it is evident that this process is picking up speed!
To preserve the viability of the vaccine and microneedle materials, vaccine patches will need to be manufactured in a cleanroom. For our medtech partners, ISP offers ISO 8, Class 100,000 cleanroom manufacturing capabilities with additional white-room capabilities for specialty packaging and assembly of sensitive components.
ISP’s Collaboration with OEMs
The ISP Team appreciated the opportunity to speak to many customers and prospective customers about the future of diagnostics materials. Although our team does not include scientists or doctors, we pride ourselves on collaborating with the best and brightest engineers and OEMs to deliver converting solutions that work for their applications. A key benefit to working with ISP is the access to material partnerships that we have in the industry. We celebrate our ability to bridge the relationship between a material manufacturer and a product engineer to create an innovative component for the diagnostic industry. If you’re ready to learn more about how we can enhance the manufacturability and cost savings for your die cut diagnostic components, reach out to our team today to collaborate on your next project!
